Born May 10, 1912 in Nottoway County, Va., he was the son of the late Clyde Henry and Gertrude M. Cralle Shorter.
Russell was a retired employee of the C&O Railway Company in Hinton. He was a former member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hinton and was currently a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg. He had been a resident of Fredericksburg since 1998.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Mullins Shorter in August of 1998.
Survivors include a son, William J. Shorter and wife Neta of Fredericksburg, Va; two grandchildren, Kelly Coleman of Petersburg, Va., and Steven Shorter of Fredericksburg; three great grandchildren; one half brother; and two half sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Va.
Friends called from 7 until 8 p.m. on Monday evening at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg.
Rite of Committal will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday March 29, 2006 at Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton with Fr. Arthur Bufogle officiating. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

MEADOW CREEK — James “Buddy” Brent Burdette, 73, of Meadow Creek, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at his home following a long illness.
Born July 22, 1937, at Meadow Creek, he was a son of the late Curtis and Brent Gwinn Burdette.
Buddy was a lifelong resident of Summers County, a retired brakeman for the C&O Railroad and a member of the Meadow Creek Baptist Church. He loved to collect knives and guns, riding his four wheeler, gardening and was an avid story teller.
Preceding him in death is his first wife, Doris Jean Dillon Garten and an infant brother.
Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter, one grandson, one granddaughter and one great grandson.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Harry Allen will be officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral parlor from noon until time of services on Saturday.
