Mr. Burdette was 25 years of age and leaves five brothers and many other relatives and friends. Among his brothers are J.W. and J.I. Burdette of his city. He formerly resided at Brooks. He leaves a wife, who was Miss Bivens before marriage".1 |

Elderly man struck by Amtrak after driving around crossing gate

An elderly Summers County man was killed just after noon Wednesday when his car was struck by an Amtrak passenger train as he tried to drive around a gate blocking a railroad crossing at Sandstone, police said.
Lawrence Burdette Sr., 89, originally from Charleston but living at Meadow Creek, died instantly when his 2003 Hyundai passenger car was struck by the train, Summers Sheriff Garry Wheeler said.
According to Wheeler, Burdette had stopped at Richmond’s Store on W.Va. 20 and was attempting to leave the parking lot and turn back onto the roadway.
Wheeler said a railroad crossing separates the store from the road, and when Burdette left the parking lot, safety gates had come down, blocking the tracks to allow a train to cross. Thinking he had enough time to cross before a slow-moving CSX freight train reached him, Wheeler said, Burdette attempted to drive around the gate.
“The gates activated because of the train coming north, but Mr. Burdette didn’t see the Amtrak train traveling south,” Wheeler said. “It hit him broadside on the driver’s side, traveling about 60 miles per hour.”
The operator of the Amtrak No. 50 train, the Cardinal, which was traveling to its next stop in Hinton, blew the train’s horns and began emergency braking, Wheeler said, but slammed into Burdette’s vehicle, pushing it a quarter mile down the track.
Wheeler said Burdette had to be extricated from his car and was pronounced dead.
According to store employees, Burdette stopped at the store every day to purchase a newspaper, Wheeler said.
Christy Furrow said she witnessed the accident from a nearby store where she works.
“A little car went around the gates, and, of course, the Amtrak couldn’t stop,” she said.
None of the 77 passengers on the train were injured.
The Cardinal runs from Chicago to New York City, said Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell in Washington, D.C.
Passengers remained on board the train while inspectors examined it for damage. The train continued on its way about two hours and 15 minutes after the crash, said Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari in the Chicago office.
In addition to Wheeler, the accident was investigated by CSX railroad police.
