Longtime Sutton resident George W. ''Ma'' Johnson, 88, died Nov. 4, 1995, at the Palmer Pioneers' Home. A funeral was held at Sutton Baptist Fellowship, Mile 61, Glenn Highway, in Sutton. The Rev. Phil Lielasus officiated. Pallbearers were Jim Harris, Eino Kuoppala, Johnny Norbo, Emil Stadler, Walt Mayr and Glen Day. A reception followed at the Alpine. Interment was in Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born April 5, 1907, in Sandstone, W. Va., to James and Louisa Bragg Johnson. He began mining coal in West Virginia at age 18. Mr. Johnson came to Alaska in 1943 with the Army and was sent to Jonesville Mine in Sutton. He worked as a timer man, motor man and crusher man. He mentioned he had worked with nearly everybody at the Jonesville Mine, which spanned the 25 years until the mine closed in 1968. Sam Moore was responsible for Mr. Johnson's nickname, Ma, which was soon used by everyone. A close friend said: ''Mr. Johnson mothered everyone and was truly a gentle man and was loved by all who knew him. He could be found drinking tea every morning at the Alpine, exchanging stories with locals as well as passers-by until he moved to the Palmer Pioneers' Home.'' He leaves no known survivors. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.18,19,6 |

Robert J. Meadows, 79, of Post Falls, Idaho, passed away Jan. 23, 2015. Bob was born Nov. 14, 1935, in Sandstone, W.Va. to Fred H. and Annie F. Meadows.
Bob served proudly in the USAF. He worked as a mechanic and salesman in Washington, Idaho and Ohio. He then worked for NaChurs Plant Food Co. in Marion, Ohio, as an area supervisor before retiring to the Coeur d'Alene area.
Bob was a member and past Master of Oliver Lodge 447, F&AM Masonic Lodge in Caledonia, Ohio. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner of Aladin Temple Shrine in Columbus, Ohio.
He loved fishing, woodworking, and time spent on his computer.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert "Scrappy Joe" Meadows, Jr., and brother James. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 56 years, Tamara; his children: son Eric (Lisa) Meadows of Marion, Ohio, daughter Peggy (Rocky) Jordan of Marion, Ohio, and daughter Lindy (John) Engelhart of Post Falls, Idaho; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob also leaves behind lifelong and best friend William Flanagan of Virginia.
At Bob's request, there will be no services, and cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Shriners Hospital.1 |

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio — Mrs. Joy Armada Foster, 85, of Newton Falls, passed away at 1:48 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio, with her daughter by her side.
Joy was born on Wednesday, October 17, 1923, in Green Sulphur Springs. She was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Lura Hedrick Hicks.
Joy grew up in Green Sulphur Springs with her 13 brothers and sisters where she graduated Valedictorian from Green Sulphur District High School at Sandstone. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Youngstown State University with a dual degree in elementary education and secondary business education. She taught school in the Labrae School District where she retired in 1981 after 33 years of teaching.
Mrs. Foster was a Jennings Scholar. She was a member of the Sandstone Baptist Church, Retired Teacher Association of Trumbull County and Retired Teachers Association of Ohio. Joy also worked for the Department of Defense for two years during World War II. She loved flower gardening, fishing with her husband and most of all time spent with her granddaughter and great-granddaughters.
Mrs. Foster’s memories will be carried on by her daughter and son-in-law Phoebe Jo and Lowell D. Smith of Newton Falls, Ohio. Her two sisters, Bonnie Sutton of Waynesville, N.C., and Devota Shumate of Madison, Ind. Her brother and sister-in-law Orlie and Uthalee Hicks of Lake Milton, Ohio. Her granddaughter Ms. Melissa Jo Reibestein of Newton Falls, and her two great-granddaughters Maria Jo and Melanie Joy Reibestein also of Newton Falls.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Foster, four brothers, Joseph, Claytus, Virgil and Clyde Hicks, two sisters, Grace Holland and Ova France, two half brothers, Boone and Byron Hicks, and two half sisters, Evaline Fox and Violet Miller.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Robert Rodes and Dennis E. Cales officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery at Sandstone.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral parlors.
