Kathryn Jane Burdette, 86, of Perkins, died on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, in Perkins. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Perkins, with the Rev. Steve Bredesen officiating. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born on July 5, 1922, in Yawkey, W.V., to Joseph Carr Dunlap and Bonnie Belle (Starkey) Dunlap. She married Lawrence Donovan Burdette on Dec. 9, 1945, in Charleston, W.V. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2000.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Clyde J. Dunlap.
She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca J. Morton and her husband Wendell of Stillwater, and Nancy K. Knopp of Charleston, W.V; two grandchildren, Jason A. Pettit of Charleston, W.V. and Kerry K. Morton of Stillwater; and one brother, James Dunlap and his wife Loretta of Hull, TX.

Curtis Ward Fauber, 89, of Elkview died Oct. 18, 1996, at home after a short illness. He was retired from Libby Owens Ford with 41 years' service and a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Kanawha City. He belonged to the Salina Lodge 27, Malden, and the AF&AM. Surviving: son, James E . of Sun Lakes, Ariz; sister, Leona McCown of Charleston; brother, Eugene of Charleston; two grandchildren. Mrs. Leona Fauber McCown was the third of five children born to the late Cass Ward "Billy" Fauber and Rosa Burdette Fauber. Her birth was on May 27, 1913, at Crown Hill. She entered the state of deep sleep on Oct. 26, 2007, in Hubbard Hospice House.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents, are her husband Jesse McCown; brothers, Curtis, Granville and Franklin Fauber. Surviving her is a brother, Eugene Fauber of Cross Lanes. Also surviving her are many, many nephews and nieces; as well as a host of friends who loved her dearly.
Leona was a graduate of Cabin Creek District High School at East Bank. She later entered Morris Harvey College and had a B.S. Degree. Incidentally, her attendance at Morris Harvey was during the time frame Senator Robert C. Byrd was also attending Morris Harvey.
She was retired from the Kanawha County School System after serving 21 years. During her tenure she taught several grades at Chandler and Tiskelwah elementary schools. After her retirement, she continued to tutor reading students in her home and taught music as well.
Leona was a member of the Charleston Church of God, currently known as Harvest Time Church of God, located at Patrick and Washington Streets, since 1940. She was a faithful servant in many different offices over the period of time, including superintendent. She had special joy in teaching children the basics of education which they would use the rest of their lives. However, the most important part of their learning was to teach them about the love of God and his commandments and what each of them required in detail.
Leona was compassionate, giving and loving. She will be missed, for she had a way to leave a happy positive impression on every one she touched in her life. She was committed to the welfare of others and will be remembered as an energetic and engaging leader who was devoted to her Heavenly Father and her mission in life.
A tribute to the life of Leona will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at Johnson-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Napier officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to say a thank you to the staff at the Hubbard Hospice House for your excellent care given to Leona.

FRANKLIN LAMONT FAUBER, 69, OF 5513 KANAWHA Ave. S.E., died Friday night in a drowning accident in Charleston, said Sgt. Dallas Staples with the Charleston Police Department. Fauber's body was discovered Saturday afternoon, Staples said. He was a former employee of Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Plant and was a Marine veteran of World War II. Eugene Jennings Fauber
Eugene Jennings Fauber, 88, of Cross Lanes passed away at home Saturday, November 8, 2008, after a long illness.
He was born July 19, 1920, at Crown Hill, Kanawha County, to the late Cass "Billy" Ward Fauber and Rose Etta Burdette Fauber.
Mr. Fauber was of the Christian faith and was formerly with Sears. He was department manager for men and boys clothing and accessories for 19 years. He retired from the West Virginia Department
of Employment Security after 24 years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the European Theatre invasion of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was member of the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Pearl Kincaid Fauber; twin sons at premature birth; sister, Leona Fauber McCown; and brothers Curtis, Granville, and Franklin Fauber.
Surviving are his sons, Eugene Jay Fauber of St. Albans and Michael Jennings Fauber of Brunswick, Md; daughters, Nancy Rose Fauber Clark of York, Pa., and Mary Jane Fauber West; and foster daughter, Ellen Jane Theis, both of Cross Lanes; 11 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2008, in the chapel of Tyler Mountain Funeral Home and Memory Gardens. Burial with military honors will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 5233 Rocky Fork Rd., Cross Lanes, WV 25313.
There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

"In 1951, the state of West Virginia adopted the electric chair as a more humane form of execution. Paul Glenn, an inmate of the facility, is credited with building the chair (which was collectively dubbed "Old Sparky") that would later be used. On March 26, 1951, Fred Painter and Harry Burdette, both convicted of murdering Edward C. O'Brien, were the first inmates to be put to death by electrocution at the West Virginia Penitentiary.
On March 26, 1951, twenty-six-year-old Harry Atlee Burdette and thirty-two-year-old Fred Clifford Painter became the first men to be executed in the penitentiary's electric chair. Both were convicted of the first degree murder of soft drink salesman Edward C. O'Brien. The two allegedly stomped O'Brien to death in a Summers Street parking lot in Charleston around midnight on July 30, 1949.
Burdette's attorneys, former Charleston mayor D. Boone Dawson and D. L. Salisbury, argued their client had been too intoxicated to have premeditated the murder. Burdette testified that he and Painter had consumed 4 1/2 pints of whiskey and nearly a case of beer since 11:00 on the morning of the incident. Burdette added that he had blacked out the moment the altercation began and came to in jail the next day. Apparently, Burdette and Painter had attacked O'Brien to steal a fifth of wine. Salisbury argued during Painter's trial that his client was legally insane, due to cerebral syphilis, and that he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. In both trials, the juries quickly returned guilty verdicts against the defendants.
Originally, Burdette's electrocution was scheduled for April 1950, and Painter's was set for the following June. Unsuccessful appeals delayed the executions and Warden Orel J. Skeen set a March 23, 1951 date for both. Shortly after their convictions, Burdette and Painter were baptized in a creek near Charleston, and with March 23 being Good Friday, Governor Okey Patteson stayed the executions until the following Monday. A third man, Robert Ballard Bailey, was also to be put to death on that day for the murder of Charleston tavern keeper Rosina Fazio, the mother of Charleston restauranteur Joe Fazio. On March 22, Patteson commuted Bailey's death sentence to life imprisonment.
Due to the publicity surrounding the state's first use of the electric chair, Warden Skeen departed from tradition and granted reporters interviews with the convicted men one hour before the execution. After a last meal, Burdette was strapped into the chair at 9:02 p.m. Following one electric shock, Dr. Charles A. Zeller pronounced him dead after a period of three minutes and forty-eight seconds. Guards placed Painter in the chair at 9:10. The first surge merely knocked him unconscious, requiring another jolt. At 9:19, Painter was pronounced dead. Three separate buttons had been pushed by prison employees, although only one conveyed current, so nobody would know who had delivered the fatal shock. Attending the execution were former Delegate Schupbach and state Senator Robert C. Byrd.
