Howard A. Burdette
Howard A. Burdette, 87, of Charleston, formerly of Alderson, died Dec. 3, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, following a long illness.
Born Feb. 17, 1916, at Griffith Creek, he was the son of the late Oscar David and Nettie Mae Williams Burdette. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Cleta Fortenberry; and four brothers, Orvis, Herbert, Garnet and P.K. Burdette.
Mr. Burdette is survived by two sisters, Millie Van Der Weil of Gainesville, Ga., Madeline Burns of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson. Burial will follow in Griffith Creek Cemetery, Alderson.
Friends may call one hour prior to service at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Madeline Victoria Burdette Burns, 89, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 21, 2011, at her home following a long illness. Born May 22, 1921, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late Oscar David and Nettie Mae Williams Burdette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Burns, Sr; five brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Burns worked at various occupations throughout her life. She retired from the city of Charleston Police Department, where she had worked as a meter maid. She was a former member of the Griffith Creek Baptist Church, Alderson, for many years and was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, Charleston, where she had served as librarian. Mrs. Burns developed a love for motorcycle riding late in life and, at the age of 83, she rode with her son to and from Myrtle Beach, S.C, to attend Bike Week. At the age of 84, she again rode with her son to and from the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C, during Memorial Day Weekend 2005. Mrs. Burns was devoted to her family. She loved her church family, her neighbors and friends. Survivors include a daughter, Marietta M. Burns Vermillion and her husband, Earlie M. Vermillion, of Charleston; a son, Robert T. Burns, Jr. and his companion, Kimberly Arrington, of Charleston; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Jim Marcum and Pastor Audie Sorg officiating. Burial will follow in Alderson Cemetery, Alderson. Friends may call two hours prior to the service Saturday at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson. Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Brothers of the Wheel MC. The family wishes to thank Madeline's caretakers and HospiceCare. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Griffith Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, HC 73 Box 24A, Alderson, WV 24910, or Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W, Charleston, WV 25312-2536. Millie Mae Burdette Kuhn Van der Wiel, loving Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister and Friend, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 after a brief illness.
Millie was born on December 3, 1923 in Alderson, West Virginia, one of eight children born to the late David Oscar Burdette and Nettie Mae Burdette.
Millie was a member of First Baptist Church and was faithful in her service. She was a member of the Agape – Fidelis Sunday School Class and volunteered for The Family Life Center for many years. She loved taking her nieces and nephews shopping when they were little and the trend continued with her grandchildren. Millie loved spoiling everyone!
During Millie’s lifetime, it was always her desire to take care of others. She owned and operated the Charleston Boarding House on Quarrier Street in downtown Charleston, West Virginia. It was then that she met the love of her life, Paul Kuhn, Sr. They married and later moved to Clearwater, Florida where they raised three boys. At that time, Millie also managed “The Jack Tarr Hotel”. She loved her position at the Hotel and was excited when the agent of one very famous dolphin by the name of “Flipper”, made reservations to stay in the Hotel for a couple of weeks while doing a photo shoot. Millie made sure her children were there to greet him, as well as her niece and nephew from Gainesville, who happened to be in town at the time.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dwight Kuhn, Sr. She later married Jacob Van der Wiel, whom also preceded Millie in death. Millie is survived by her three sons, Paul Kuhn, Jr. & his wife, Jane and granddaughter, Taylor Kuhn of Chestnut Mountain, Roy Kuhn & his wife, Sabrina of Lynn Haven, Florida, granddaughter & husband, Lauren & Carlos Dias, great-grandson, Braeden Dias of Palm Coast, Florida and Charles Kuhn of Chestnut Mountain, sister, Madeline Burns of Charleston, West Virginia, a number of nieces & nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews, as well as special friends, Mary Nell White and Joan Maddox, who cared for her so passionately during her illness.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 16, 2010 from 6 – 8 pm at the funeral home. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, December 17, 2010 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of First Baptist Church in Gainesville, with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Bill Coates and Reverend David Matthews will officiate.
The family would like to thank everyone including Willow Wood Nursing Center and Crossroads Hospice for their wonderful care and concern during Millie’s illness. In lieu of flowers any remembrances you wish to make can be made to First Baptist Church, 751 Green Street, Gainesville, GA 30501.
