| Birth* | 19 Jun 1964 | Ernest John Thompson was born on 19 Jun 1964 at Anchorage, Anchorage Borough, AK.1 |
| He was the son of John Thompson and Gloria Boyd.1 | ||
| Death* | 20 Mar 2009 | Ernest died on 20 Mar 2009 at Alaska Regional Hospital, Anchorage, Anchorage Borough, AK, at age 44. Lifelong Anchorage resident Ernest John Thompson, 44, died March 20, 2009, at Alaska Regional Hospital while surrounded by his family. No service is planned. A celebration of life will take place Thursday evening at VFW Post 1685 located at 1200 W. 33rd Ave. Ernie was born in Anchorage on June 19, 1964, the same year as the great Alaska earthquake, to John and Gloria Thompson. He played the violin in school orchestras and participated in the Alyeska Mighty Mites Ski Racing program instructed by his uncle, Bill Hume. Ernie graduated from East Anchorage High School in 1982. Throughout his lifetime, Ernie worked for MarkAir, The Office Place, at various fisheries around the state, and on cleanup after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. "But mostly, he was known as an expert and talented mechanic with a gift for diagnostics," his family wrote. "Ernie was never wrong in finding the cause of a mechanical failure. And foremost, like every true Alaskan, he loved to fish. "During all of life's trials, Ernie remained likeable. Everybody liked Ernie. He always had a smile on his face, mischief on his mind, and the gift of gab. Ernie would talk to everyone he met, and those he didn't meet. "Even when making inquiry phone calls, to businesses or for information, he would first introduce himself saying, 'This is Ernie.' After that, they couldn't forget him. He was a real third generation Alaska Callison, both in his appearance and temperament, from his white hair to loud laughter. "His great-uncle, Darrell Callison, was a homesteader in Sutton after World War II and led the way for members of the Callison family to follow." Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gloria Thompson, and grandparents, Irene and John Carr. He is survived by his brother, Max Thompson; sister, Gloriette Thompson; several nephews; niece, Ally Thompson; many first and second cousins; and longtime girlfriend, Laura Bartman.1 |
