However, there is an entry in Order Book 3 of Alleghany Co, VA, dated September 1832, in which Andrew Kimberlin is granted letters for the administration of the estate of "Charles Fridley deceased." In Deed Book 2 (1829-1833), p. 439 of Alleghany Co, dated 13 September 1832, an indenture is listed between Peggy Fridley "widow of Charles Fridley", Isaac Fridley, Ann Fridley, Sampson Bennet and Pheobe his wife, "formerly Pheobe Fridley," Lydia, Polly, Delila, Jesse, Lucinda and Richard Fridley, "chilldren and heirs of Charles Fridley, dec'd" to Jacob Kimberlin to purchase 200 acres of land on Potts Creek. On 2 April 1835, a survey was done for 420 acres in Rich Patch for Jacob Tingler, "adjoining the lands of Charles Fridley, deceased." On 30 Nov 1838, Jesse Humphries had a survey for 300 acres joining "the land of the heirs of Charles Fridley, deceased". Charles was listed in the tax rolls on 27 February 1832, so apparently died between March and September 1832.11,1 |

(Witness) Census | 29 Aug 1870 | Margaret 'Peggy' Armentrout appeared on the census of 29 Aug 1870 in the household of David Fridley and Delila Fridley at Boiling Spring Twp, Alleghany Co, VA.2 |
Research Note* | 24 Apr 1871 | On 29 April 1871, Margaret submitted an application for a widow's pension on the service of her husband Charles Fridley in the War of 1812. The application was attested by Anthony Harman and Charles Fridley (probably the son of John Fridley). The application was rejected because Charles had served only 40 days, not the minimum 60 days as required under the pension act.3 |
Death* | 15 Jun 1873 | Margaret died on 15 Jun 1873 at Alleghany Co, VA. Margaret Fridley, d. 15 June, Rich Patch, of old age & genl debility, age 87, par. n/a Armentrout, b. Rockingham Co, farmer, consort of George Fridley, dec'd [sic], informant C.M. Stull, neighbor & friend. Although this death record lists her husband as George Fridley, this appears to be Margaret 'Peggy' Armentrout, widow of Charles Fridley. Both George and Charles lived in the Rich Patch and both died 30-40 years prior to Margaret's death (which was reported by a neighbor, not family). George Fridley's wife Margaret Armentrout appears to have died before 1840 (no census category for a female her age) and does not appear in any subsequent censuses. Margaret 'Peggy' does appear in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, and is named as the widow of Charles Fridley in her War of 1812 widow's pension application in 1871.9 |

Census | 11 Aug 1860 | Jesse Fridley and Julia Ann Persinger appeared on the census as head of household at Alleghany Co, VA, on 11 Aug 1860.2 |
Death* | between 1861 and 1864 | Jesse died between 1861 and 1864 at Civil War. There is no record of Jesse's death or of his service in the Civil War. According to the pension application of Jesse's widow Julia Ann Fridley in 1888, Jesse served in the Virginia Militia. In answer to the question of when and where Jesse died, Julia answered "Died at his home in Alleghany County having been brought home sick from the White Sulphur Springs where he had been taken (from Camp Buckner) for medical treatment. Cause of death disease of the lungs [unclear word] from exposure at camp." From this passage it is clear that Jesse died during the War, as Camp Buckner was a Confederate recruitment camp in Greenbrier Co (now WV) and did not exist beyond the period of the War. A number of researchers have put Jesse's date of death as 1888 given the date of the pension application, but 1888 was when the first law was passed in Virginia establishing pensions for war widows, and Julia could not have applied any sooner. In December 1864, Julia Fridley made a motion in the Alleghany Circuit Court to bind "John Fridley, an infant, child of said dec'd who will be 11 year old on the first day of February next" to Isaac Fridley until he attains the age of 21 years. In this motion, Julia is described as "July Fridley widow of Jesse Fridley dec'd".5,6 |
