| Biography* | THE FRIDLEY'S received from Nancy Viola Blakely Augusta County, Va. was established in 1738 but it was not until 1745 that the county could be organized and have its own seat of goverment at Staunton. Just 8 years later the FRIDLEY family would become a permanent fixture in Augusta County history. On Dec 20, 1753 George Fridley bought 100 acres of land from Colonel James Patton on the waters of Craigs Creek (1) from the holiday of 1753 until today's seasons, there has always been FRIDLEYs in Augusta County. The subjects of this article are Jacob and Hanna (Hanger, see note at end) FRIDLEY. The couple maye be considered the grandparents of most all of the Augusta County FRIDLEYs. Jacob was the son of Ludwick FRIDLEY, who died before his two sons George and Jacoby were of age (21 years). Ludwick's estate was appraised on Dec 20 1771 by archibald Huston, Augustine Price and George Mallow (2). After their father died the two boys were separated and bound out to two differnet masters. George would be sent to William Sommerset where he may not have received the most loving treatment for the church elders pondered taking him away from Sommerset (3). Jacob would be sent to John Angenbright under very specific terms. I quote here from the Augusta County order book, #16, page 193 "to give a flavor of Ludwick desires Jacob FRIDLEY orphan of Ludwick FRIDLEY to be bound to John Angenbright to learn him to read and write and understand figures as far as the rule of three. To pay him 10 LBS in Lieu of a suit of clothes and freedom dues to teach on cause him to be taught the trade of Blacksmith" dated 21 May 1777. Jacob grew up and in 1786 he asked for the hand of Miss Hanna Hanger in marriage. She accepted but would her father allow it. Hanna could not get married with out her father's permission. She was not 21 years old yet you will find here father's answer re produced as accurately as possible at the end of this article. So the happy coupled were married on April 27, 1786 (4). Almost 3 years exactly to the day, Jacob and Hanna bought 101 acres and 46 poles (1 pole equals 16.5 feet) from Samuel and Mary Cantmill for 101 lbs, 18 schillings, and 3 pense (5). Jacob appears to have been avery diligant young man to purchased such a place. To place their events into a proper historical perspective you should know that on the very day (April 23, 1789) that Jacob and Hanna were buying their land from Samuel Cantmill and his wife something very spectacular was happing in Manhattan, NY. There a crowd was gathering to watch George Washington parade into the city on a splendid white horse to accept the first presidency of the United States (6). Jacob and Hanna went on to live full lives and produce many heirs that would becom the great grand parents of many Spirit readers. In May of 1832, before she died Hanna disposed of some of her possessions to her children a list of what she granted "For natural love and affection" to here son James may prove interesting, 1. One big walnut table 2. One walnut desk 3. Little pot 4. One spider chain 5. One candle stand 6. One feather bed and bedstead bedding 7. Walnut chest 8. One big iron kettle 9. One big dutch oven 10. 5 irons 11. One white bow In Conculsion I would like to thank the FRIDLEYs who have made this story possible. Also if any of you FRIDLEYs have wondered where that Antique Spider Chain came from you might just thank Grandma Hanna. Note references (1) Augusta County, Va. Note from Buddy Hanna. this article was copied by my Mother-in-law in Staunton, Va in July of 1998. I have done some research and found some questions. First Jacob's marriage to Hanna Hanger. In the Marriage book the Marriage is listed twice, Once Jacob married Hanah Hanger on 26 April 1786 Listed as follows: Hanger, Hanah & Jacob Fridley 26 Apr1786 d.(meaning daughter of) Fredrick, b. (meaning bondsman) George Hanger, Mininster Archibald Scott (see Olinger), rpt 27 Apr 1786. This is were things get interesting, under Olinger you see this: Olinger, Hanah & Jacob Fridley 27 Apr 1786 Minister Archibald (see Hanger) There are total of 3 Augusta County Marriage books all having different starting dates for the books. The first book published has Jacob Fridley marrying Hanah Olinger on 27 April 1786. Ages of the two women, Hanger was born abt 1765 and Olinger abt 1754, this if from other family researchers. Olinger would have had children after 50 from her marriage to Jacob. Next, I have contact 4 other familys (2 Olinger and 2 Hanger), both Olinger's say Jacob married their Hannah and only one of the Hanger say Hannah married Jacob. Both Hanger's families say Hannah died in Ohio and not in Augusta County, Va. While both Olingers state Hannah Died in Augusta Co., Va. I have ask for documentation from both families.
