| Biography* | | MARION and CHARLES W. MIZE Marion and Charles Mize were brothers that moved to Summers County, West Virginia from Patrick County, Virginia by 1875. Their parents were Sampson and Elizabeth Stone Mize. Their grandparents were John and Francis Ingram Mize and Littleberry and Nancy Hurt Stone. Charles' and Marion's brothers and sisters were Ruth, Littleberry, Elizabeth (Eliza), James Reed. George Abram, William Burl, and John Quincy A. Mize. They had a half-brother and half-sister by their father's second wife and they were Henry L. and Elizabeth. Their brother Littleberry had moved to the Dunn area on the Summers County and Mercer County border in the mid 1850's, and their sister Eliza was staying with Charles when the 1880 Census was taken. Charles Mize died on April 12, 1916 and his age is listed on his tombstone as 67 years and 10 days. He would have been born on April 2. 1849 if the information on the tombstone weer correct but Charles was four years old when the census was taken in Patrick County on August 23,1850. Marion NIize died March 17, 1926 and his tombstone says he was born October 27, 1854. In his death record it says he died of heart disease and was 76 years, four months and 26 days old. This would have made his birth year 1850. Marion was seven years old on the 1860 Census for Patrick County and this would make his year of birth 1853. On the 1900 Census for Summers County it states that Marion was born in October of 1855. In the birth records of Patrick County, Virginia there is listed a Thompson Mize who was born on the Smith River in March of 1853 to Sampson and Elizabeth Mize and this date corresponds with the age given for Marion on the 1860 Census. If someone could confirm that Marion's first or middle name was Thompson it would give us a more accurate date of birth. The reason I have for believing Marion's birthdate is wrong on his tombstone is that Sampson Mize's first wife, Elizabeth Stone Mize, died on June 29, 1854 and Sampson remarried on January 12, 1855 to Nancy Clark. Charles and Marion Mize married twin sisters. Charles married Christina Ann Miller on October 7, 1875 and Marion married Mary Elizabeth Miller on January 6, 1876. The girls were the daughters of William Anderson and Mary A. Dequasy Miller and they were born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia on February 13. 1859 according to the records in that county. The tombstones of both women say they were born in 1857 and I believe this date to be correct and that 1859 was the year their births were recorded. According to the records of Summers County, Charles and Christina's twelth child, a male, was born October 31, 1899 at Halidan, however I only have information on eleven children. Marion and Mary had twelve children also. Charles and Ann are buried in the Miller Cemetary at Green Sulphur and Marion and Mary are buried in the churchyard at Low Gap, both in Summers County. West Virginia.
