Joseph Bragg
M, #1013, b. Mar 1756, d. before 1809
| Biography* | | Many online genealogies link this Joseph to the Joseph Bragg son of Joseph and Susannah (Dozier) Bragg of Richmond Co, VA. I've seen this connection made in many places, but absolutely none of them have any documented proof that this is the same Joseph. The data we do know on Joseph doesn't provide any links to the Richmond Co, VA Braggs (and later Stafford and Culpeper Cos), so ultimately it would likely take DNA testing to sort it out one way or another.
Currently, there's no record of our Joseph's marriage to Margaret and her surname also remains a question. I've seen it shown as "Gill," but again without any citation or documentation of where that came from. The earliest we know of our Joseph is his purchase of land on Black Thorn Creek in what is now Pendleton Co, WV, but was Augusta Co, VA at the time (1788). He bought additional property there in 1794, then he and Margaret sold the land in 1799 when he left for Greenbrier Co.
The history of Joseph Bragg by Don Norman in 1995 (linked from the citation below) claims Joseph was born in Pennsylvania in March 1756. That would surely discredit any possible relationship to Joseph and Susannah Bragg, as their children were all born in Richmond or Stafford Cos, VA, but then the Norman history does not source where this information came from, so it may be in error as well.
The other commonly cited source about Joseph is about his participation in Lord Dunmore's war: "Joseph was listed on the payroll of soldiers at Romney VA and Winchester VA during Lord Dunmore's War. He was listed on the roll of George Washington's company August 1, 1776. He was listed on both Joseph Bowman's and John Tipton's roll. He was describe as being 21 years of age when he joined the army in the County of Maidstone VA, 5 feet 8 inches tall and pitted with small pox on the right shoulder." What is interesting about this entry is that it states that he joined the army "in the County of Maidstone VA." There is, of course, no county of Maidstone in Virginia, but there was a stockade by the name of Maidstone that was erected at the mouth of the Cacapon River in Morgan Co. (W)Va in 1756. (http://www.wvculture.org/history/journal_wvh/wvh1-2-4.html). This location is on the Potomac River on the border with Maryland, and only 8 miles from the Pennsylvania line. This suggests that there could be a PA relationship with Joseph. |
