William Frank and Ella Burdette Brown’s daughter, Mary Weikle, was born May 10, 1919, in the log settlers’ cabin in Organ Cave, where she later bore her children and, as it should be fitting, she went home on March 6, 2009. Educated in the public schools of Greenbrier County, Mary Weikle was influenced by the great depression. A mother and homemaker, she was employed at CJ’s Grocery and Foodland. She was active at the Organ Cave Community Center and took care of the keys for many years. She saved things others threw away and lived a life of conservation, modesty, humility, and personal strength. She was her own person and was not boastful, insecure, or vain. A member of Salem Presbyterian Church, she was a member of the Presbyterian Women and a former representative on the Presbytery. She was strong in her faith and spoke volumes about it through her kindness, soft demeanor, and speech. Fiddle-dee-dee was the harshest word she ever spoke. She was not angry, coarse, or cruel. She was happy in her life. We had a hard time letting go. She was so active that we were shocked when this past fall she suddenly began to slow down. She was taking naps! Described as showing her age of “50” we couldn’t believe that our mother was suddenly and without warning almost 90. An active woman who kept a clean home, she baked bread and desserts for her family and prepared huge full-course meals. She made the best deviled eggs, rhubarb pie, and squirrel gravy in the state. Her bread fresh out of the oven, steamed or toasted, warmed our stomachs as she warmed our hearts. Her home was always our home, her fire our fire. She kept us warm and fulfilled until the last few months of her life when we did our best to care for her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mason Weikle; sisters, Katherine (Roscoe) Hedrick, Dorothy (Jack) Hinkle, and Francis (Albert) Livesay; brothers, Jim and Benny (Margaret) Brown; a daughter-in-law, Olga Weikle; and a brother-in-law, Howard Weikle. ‘Mother’ is survived by a daughter, Sue (Butch) Kemp of Roanoke, Va; sons, Robert (Patricia) Weikle of Warrenton, Va., William Weikle of Organ Cave, Doug Weikle of Aurora, Colo., and Philip (Deborah) Weikle of Scott Depot; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Weikle of Ronceverte; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her best friend and traveling companion, Page Dickson. She was the best of people; she was the foundation for our lives. Thank you for always being our mother, our parent, our spiritual leader, our rock. We will miss you and remember you when we look at the birds in the field, the irises, Cyprus trees, the wood lands. We see you in your grandchildren and pray they can aspire to live as you have lived. If we all lived this way, the world would be better for doing so. You lived a good life; how fortunate we were to share it with you. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Salem Presbyterian Church in Organ Cave, with Rev. Carl Pattison officiating. A gathering of family and friends will take place at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, W.Va., today from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that donations be made to Salem Presbyterian Church, RR 2, Box 289, Ronceverte, WV 24970.
