Item: wife Nancy, one-third of land for her lifetime Item: sons Madison Burdette, Lewis Burdette, Jackson Burdette, all lands subject to dower, to pay daughters Elizabeth Bobbitt; Amelia Lemons, widow of James Lemons, dec'd; Ann E. Ellis, wife of Newman H. Ellis; Malinda J. Bobbitt, wife of Oregon Bobbitt; and Virginia C. Lemons, wife of Robert Lemons, $200 in equal payments, 1/3 in one year, 1/3 in two years, 1/3 in three years. Sons Madison, Lewis and Jackson Burdette, executors. Dated: 21 January 1856 Witnesses: James Miller, Jesse Jones Proved: April Term, 1863. [taken from Will Book, Monroe Co. Courthouse, Union, WV, Oct. 1990]

"The wife of Isham [should be wife of Andrew Jackson, Elizabeth Shumate], while working as a girl in the sugar orchard, carried a bucket of sap in each hand and another on her head. The first of her 12 children were twins, and when the third was a baby she would ride to her father's home, 35 miles away, carrying the baby in front and the twins behind her. The return would be made the next day. She lived to the age of 98, at which time there were 89 decendants of her children. C. of Isham [Andrew Jackson]: Sarah, Mary, Abner (Tex.), Granville, Nancy J., Julia A., James H., Andrew J., Elizabeth S., Joseph H., Lewis A. [Oren Morton, History of Monroe Co., WV, p. 317.]

Morton's listing of children is in error. These children are those of Andrew Jackson Burdette, Isham's son. He apparently confused Elizabeth Shumate with Nancy Shumate. Elizabeth and Andrew did have twins as their first children.
