Ruth "Johnnie" Donovan was born Ruth Burdell Johnson on New Years Eve, 1920, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada.
She and her twin sister, Reba, were the second and third children of Oliver Thomas Johnson and Flossie Amert Alderson Johnson, joining older sister Velma, and soon followed by younger brother, Tom. Ruth and her siblings grew up on a wheat farm in Pense, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was preceded in death by her brother Tom and her parents.
Ruth worked for the British government in Washington D.C. during WWII. Moving to Oakland, California after the war, she met her future husband George Clement Donovan. Ruth and George were married on December 26, 1950, and one year later became a Naturalized U.S. Citizen. Ruth adopted her nickname of 'Johnnie' to honor her Johnson lineage during this time. Children Michael George Donovan and Janice Kathleen Donovan followed to complete their family.
Johnnie, George, Mike and Jan lived in the Bay Area of California before George's promotion with Phillips Petroleum brought them to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Johnnie enjoyed a career in Banking, Medical and Oil Industries, while pursuing a lifetime passion for art. Both Mike and Jan graduated from college in Oklahoma, before making their homes in Colorado. Johnnie moved to Boulder, Colorado after George died in 1983, soon becoming 'Gram' to grandchildren Greg, Lexi, Glenna, Christopher and Paige. Sadly Christopher has also preceded her in death. Johnnie cherished her grandchildren every minute of every day. Family was the hub of Johnnie's world.
Johnnie passed away peacefully December 19, 2007, at her home in Boulder, Colorado. She is deeply missed by: Mike and wife Summer and daughter Glenna of Boulder, Colorado; Jan and husband Bill Hawkes and children Greg, Lexi and Paige of Niwot, Colorado; twin sister Reba and husband Fred Gardner of Calgary, Alberta; sister Velma and husband Roy Gaffney of Palm Desert, California; cousin LaVerne Lausten of Gig Harbor, Washington; niece Lynn Gunther of Kelowna British Columbia, and nephews Brain Gardner of Vancouver, British Columbia; and Ken Gardner of Calgary Alberta.4,1 |
