Born Oct. 30, 1919, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Ira and Lula McClung Rodes. Mr. Rodes was the retired owner of Rodes Wrecking and also retired from Merchants and Miners National Bank in Oak Hill. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater. Ram was a member of Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 AF and AM, Sewell Chapter No. 24, RAM, Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 K.T. and the Beni Kedem Temple AAONMS. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl Hall Rodes, and his second wife, Pat Wheeler Rodes. Survivors include a son, Tom Rodes and wife, Judy, of Fayetteville; four stepsons, Tom Wheeler of Germany, David Wheeler and Steve Wheeler, both of Fayetteville, and John Wheeler of Lochgelly; two stepdaughters, Sandy Bias of Oak Hill and Tammy Brown of Lochgelly; a brother, Pete Rodes of Gatewood; two sisters, Madora Ballard of Gauley Bridge and Tasty Etchinson of Galion, Ohio; a granddaughter, Leigh Ann Wolfe and husband, Shawn, of Oak Hill; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Seth Wolfe and Shawna Wolfe of Oak Hill; and nine stepgrandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Robert Begley, Tim Richardson, Tom Stafford, Rick Pannell Jr., Shawn Wolfe and James Fox and Jerry Turley as honorary pallbearer. FAYETTEVILLE – Pete Rodes, 89, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013 at Pleasant Valley Hospital at Point Pleasant. Born on March 29, 1924 at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Ira Jay and Lula McClung Rodes. Pete was a lifelong member of Gatewood Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a WWII Navy Veteran. Pete and his late wife, Joann, owned and operated grocery stores in Fayette County. He belonged to Gideons International. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Jones Rodes on January 27, 1996; and brothers, Martin Rodes, Earl Rodes, and Bill Rodes. Left to cherish his memory include his sons, Larry (Liz) Rodes and Jim (Leslie) Rodes, all of Huntington; daughters, Mary (Gary) Higgs of Harrisonburg, VA and Jeanne (Wayne) Sayre of Point Pleasant; grandchildren, Megan (Brett) Doeffinger, Nathan Sayre, Johanna (Adam) Stiltner, David Rodes, and Christina Rodes; great-granddaughter, Gwen Stiltner; and sisters, Madora Ballard of Hershey, PA and Jo Ella Etchison of Galion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Friday, June 7, 2013 at Gatewood Baptist Church with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow with military honors by American Legion Post 149 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 West Maple Avenue, Fayetteville, WV 25840. She was in the United States Cadet Corps from 1943-1945, a member of the American Red Cross Nursing Service since 1952, Laird Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni since 1945, member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, and former member of Gatewood Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Shafer; sisters, Hazel Hall and Florence Rodes. Survivors include her daughter, Robin Shafer Musick (Mark) of Charleston; granddaughter, Amy Musick Hughes (Mark) of Charleston; great-grandson, Garrett Hughes of Charleston; step-daughter, Leah Phillips (Al Watzek) of The Villages, FL; grandson, Scott Phillips (Jennifer) of Manakin Sabot, VA and sons, Jonathan, Austin, and Spencer; granddaughter, Stephanie Franckewitz (Paul Arel) of Cincinnati, Ohio and her sons, Eben and Asa; nieces, Janice Thornton of Melbourne, FL and Delores Schabowski (Jim) of Hebron, IN; and special friends and staff at Edgewood Summit. Funeral services will be 11 am, Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Monty Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 10 am – 11 am on Saturday at the funeral home.
