Fred Thomas Bragg, Sr. left his earthly life on December 4, 2015 at the age of 81. He passed away at his home surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. Fred was born on April 9, 1934 at his home in White Oak, West Virginia to Edward and Nora (Woolwine) Bragg. He left home at age eighteen to join the Navy, a decision he never regretted. He had always reminisced about the places he had been around the world. After serving in the Navy, he came back to West Virginia to marry the love of his life, Frances Gibson. Together, they had five children and moved from West Virginia to Montana and a few states in between. They finally made it home in 1970 and have been here since. In 1979, Fred retired from Affinity Coal after a massive heart attack permanently disabled him. Fred never failed to see the beauty God surrounds us with. He and his wife always prided themselves in their beautiful flowers and the joy so many others got from them. Fred and his family spent countless hours traveling just to admire this beautiful world. The Bragg home has always had an open door to family, friends and an occasional stranger which he offered a seat at the table, a warm bed, gas money, time just to listen or help any way he could to those less fortunate. Fred leaves behind his soul mate of 58 years, Frances (Gibson) Bragg; son Frank (Joyce); daughter Deborah Holliday; daughter Cindy Holliday (Dennis); son Fred Jr. (Malinda). He had eleven grandchildren: Jeffrey, Tracey (Jeremy), Megan (Michael), Brandon, Scott (Stephanie), Briana (Chris), Frank Jr. (Lydia), Bryan, Michael Jr. (Erin), Holly and Allyson. He also had eight great-grandchildren: Alisa, Gracelyn, Ryleigh, Rhiannon, Tristan, Paul Michael, Luke and Logan; Special nieces Charlotte Hardin and Patricia Osborne; Special sister-in-law Brenda Bragg (Gerald). They and their family were always very special people in his and our lives; Gerald is gone but the feelings for Brenda and family remain. Brothers: Keith and Timmy. Sisters: Nancy, Sandy, Linda and Kathy. He was predeceased by: Parents: Edward and Nora Bragg. Son: Michael Allen Bragg, Sr. Brothers: Luke and Gerald. Fred’s earthly body was cremated as to his wishes. There will be a service to celebrate his life on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm at his home. Some of his remains will be scattered by family as they travel back to special places they visited together. The remainder will be laid to rest in his yard beside his son, Michael.1

On Tuesday, March 28, 2006, Hazel Florence Sutphin, 99, passed away at her home in South Charleston. Hazel was born Nov. 12, 1906, in Oak Hill, the fourth child of seven to James William and Mary Margaret Ingram. She lived her younger years and was educated in Fayette County.

On June 11, 1928, she married Beverly W. Sutphin Sr. and together they raised six children. Upon his death in 1963, she moved to Elyria, Ohio, where she resided for 11 years. She then moved to South Charleston where she spent her remaining years.

Hazel was a member of the 5th Avenue Church of God in South Charleston where she was named Mother of the Year. She was a member of the WCG and Inspirators Sunday school class, and the Thousand Oaks Garden Club where she was named Honorary Member in 2005.

She was well known and loved for her beautiful needlework. She traveled many European countries, Caribbean Islands, Hawaii and sailed on the Queen Elizabeth II, usually with tour groups, where her kind heart and easy laugh made many long lasting friends. Hazel touched the lives of many families in the Charleston area through childcare as well. She loved to read the newspaper columns by Alice Faye Bragg, which reminded her of bygone times of childhood and life in rural West Virginia.

Hazel was dearly loved by her many friends she came to know at Adena Village. They were and are tremendous blessings to Hazel and her family.

Hazel's most evident gift was her love for Jesus Christ and her family. Even at her advanced age, she kept in touch with children, grandchildren and her "adopted" families.

She seldom missed the messages of Charles Stanley, Joel Osteen, Robert Schuler and James Kennedy on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. The blessings God bestowed on her were many and she didn't waste any of them. Hazel was a joy to all who knew her and will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Beverly W. Sutphin Sr; her sons, Paul Edward Sutphin, Marshall Luther Sutphin, Carl William Sutphin; and grandson, Edward Sutphin.

Surviving are her son, Beverly W. Sutphin Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of Middleburg, Mich. and Lakeland, Fla; daughters, Doris J. Stafford and husband, William, of Elkins, and Margaret S. "Sug" Eder and husband, Franklin "Bud" of Charleston; grandchildren, Judith Burk, Gregory Sutphin, Barbara Mastaglio, Scott Eder, Susan Osborne, Lisa Johnson, Roseanne, Tammy and Marshall Sutphin II; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on Friday, March 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Snodgrass Funeral Home. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. with the Reverends Richard Mahan and Rodney Campbell officiating. Burial will be at Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Rosella would be an eighth child, and Mary would have been 55 at the time of her birth, so perhaps she was adopted or was a foster child who took the Ingram name.
