Desdia Neva McKittrick Egan died Jan. 19, 2011; she was 96 years old.

She was born Oct. 3, 1914, in Wilson, Kan., to Martha Desdia Alderson McKittrick and Joseph Leland McKittrick. She moved to Alaska in 1937 and never left.

Neva came to Valdez in 1937 on the "Teachers Special," a steamship loaded with teachers returning for their winter jobs. She taught grades four through six and music to all levels in the Valdez public schools. She soon met William A. Egan in Valdez; they were married Nov. 16, 1940. Later, Neva joined Bill in operating their Valdez grocery store, the Valdez Supply. Their son Dennis was born in 1947.

Bill, with Neva by his side, became active in Alaska politics and the fight for statehood. The family moved to Washington, D.C., for 19 months while Bill lobbied for Alaska statehood. After statehood, Bill was elected governor; Neva's role as Alaska's first lady was hard work, yet very rewarding.

Neva treasured the experiences she had and the many people she met; she was very proud to have had a part in Alaska's history. She took great delight in retelling stories of her life in Alaska, particularly those of early statehood. Neva was active in community and political affairs and many boards and commissions. She was a gifted pianist and she loved to sing "Alaska's Flag." She had a wonderful sense of humor and gift of laughter. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her son, Dennis and daughter-in-law Linda; granddaughters and their husbands: Jill Egan and Sandy Vergano, and Leslie Egan and Tyler Malstrom; and brother, Richard McKittrick.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Egan; daughter, Elin Carol Egan; and sisters, Helen Spiegelberg, Margaret McKittrick and Josephine Trowbridge.

The family thanks Dr. Bob Urata and the staff at the Juneau Pioneers' Home for their dedication and care.1,3

Marriage*15 Feb 1950 Ramona Frances Blunt married Charles Sidney Forbes on 15 Feb 1950 at Washington, DC.2
Death*31 Jul 2005 Ramona died on 31 Jul 2005 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Washington, DC, at age 91.
Ramona Frances Blunt Forbes, 91, a longtime educator who was the founding director of the voice department at the National Cathedral School for Girls, died July 31 at the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Washington. She had Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Forbes, an artist and former government graphics specialist, oversaw the National Cathedral School for Girls' voice department for three decades until retiring in 1984.

For more than a half-century, she offered private voice, piano and organ lessons. She taught Queen Noor and former first-family members Julie Nixon Eisenhower and Lynda Johnson Robb when they were children.

Her students' recitals at the old Hillendale estate in Georgetown became much-anticipated events, said Mrs. Forbes' son Douglas, director of Lower School Music at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore.

A performer herself, Mrs. Forbes sang in a number of choirs in Washington. She performed in nearly every concert of the Cathedral Choral Society for 56 years and served in various administrative positions, including assistant treasurer and audition manager.

She was a founder of the Washington Opera Society Chorus and a soloist, assistant organist and choirmaster at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Washington.

Mrs. Forbes was born in Denver and graduated from the University of Colorado. She taught at a high school in Colorado, then at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., before moving to Washington during World War II to work as a calligrapher at the Selective Service.

She then worked at Sidwell Friends School as its upper-school music director before joining the faculty of the National Cathedral School for Girls in 1954.

She was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, Daughters of the American Revolution, National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Friday Morning Music Club.

Her husband, Charles Sidney Forbes, died in 1983; they were married for 33 years.

In addition to her son, of Baltimore, survivors include a daughter, Margaret Forbes Mendoza of Redondo Beach, Calif; a stepson, Charles Sidney Forbes Jr. of Union Bridge, Md; and five grandchildren.4,3

Death*5 Mar 2020 Marjorie died on 5 Mar 2020 at Gloucester Point, Gloucester Co, VA, at age 81.
Marjorie Thomas Zwerner of Gloucester Point, Virginia, died at her home Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the age of 81. A longtime member of Abingdon Episcopal Church, Marjorie loved needlework of all types, including crocheting, and she created numerous prayer shawls for the church. Husband, David Eric Zwerner, son Stephen Eric Zwerner, parents, Willis Manning Thomas and Alice Bates Thomas, sister, Nancy Thomas Fenno and a nephew Daniel Manning Fenno all preceded her in death. Marjorie’s father was the Commander of the submarine USS Pompano in the U.S. Navy and was lost at sea in the Pacific during WWII, leaving a five-year-old Marjorie to grow up without her father. This loss and his legacy remained important in her life, and she remained in contact with other survivors’ relatives. As a young girl, Marjorie moved to Alexandria, Virginia. It was there in elementary school that she met the love of her life, Dave. Marjorie spent her married life devoted to loving her husband and to raising three boys. No matter what, her family always came first. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was known to break down into giggles with her grandchildren. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons, Thomas L. Zwerner (Joan), John D. Zwerner (Julie), grandchildren, Daniel Zwerner, Abigail Zwerner, Hannah Zwerner, Hunter Zwerner, Joshua White (Noel), Nicholas White, Rachel Pearson (Bryce) nieces, Susan Morgan (Troy), Phyllis Fenno, Debbie Bowman, nephews Charles Fenno (Mary), Jeff Zwerner, brother-in-law John S. Zwerner (Annette), and sister-in-law Judy Baird. A service of remembrance will be held at noon Wednesday, March 11, 2020, in Abingdon Episcopal Church. Inurnment will be private. In memory of our loved one, memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Episcopal Church, PO Box 82, White Marsh, VA 23183. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.3
