Born April 13, 1922, at Montgomery, Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Denver Voil and Birdie Ann Burdette Petitt. She was a long-standing member of the Ansted Baptist Church, the Naomi Bible Class, and the church choir. Gracie was retired from the Fayette County Board of Education, where she was a cook at the Ansted Grade School. She loved camping, gardening, cooking, traveling on the bus with her Senior Friends, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Carl W. Smith; two brothers, Grant C. Petitt and D. C. Petitt, and a grandson-in-law, Allen Alexander from Charleston, S.C. Those left to cherish her memories are: her son, Larry Smith and wife, Suzanne, of Ripley; two daughters, Judy Benson and husband, Tommy, of Ansted, and Debbie McGraw and husband, Bill, of Hico; six grandchildren, Bobby Benson and wife Lynn, Sherri Rose and husband Johnny, April Alexander, Jenny Scarbrough and husband Steve, Keith McGraw and wife Christi, and Valerie McGraw; a step-granddaughter, Angela Perry; 11 great grandchildren, Michael Benson, Ericka and Damian Hinte, Jordan and Jacob Scarbrough, Bailey, Matthew, Colby, and Cullen Alexander, Kaden Rose, and Will McGraw; a step-great granddaughter, Joslyn Marie Keffer; two brothers, Gene Petitt of Danese, and Carl Petitt and wife, Lorene, of Danese; two sisters Frances Conner of Mabscott and Vivian Sweeny of Norris, Tenn; sister-in-law, Helen Petitt of Victor; special friends, Harold, Wilomene, InaJoy, Inez, Alma, Donna, Millie, and many, many other special friends in the Ansted community. Funeral services celebrating the life of Gracie will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 25, at the Ansted Baptist Church with Pastor Warren Gilpin officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor, Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Ansted Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Bobby Benson and Keith McGraw; great grandsons, Michael Benson, Damian Hinte, Jacob Scarbrough, Kaden Rose, Will McGraw, Bailey Anderson and Matthew Caimbeul; and grandsons-in-law, Steve Scarbrough and Johnny Rose. He served 4 years with the United States Marine Corps where he served his country in the Korean Conflict from 1952-1953. He worked at Piston Coal Co., City of Beckley, Corey Candy Co. and Higgins Grocery. Preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Billie Daphine Daniel Petitt, and one brother, Denver C. Petitt. Survived by his son with whom he made his home for the last six years, Grant Petitt Jr. and wife Kathy; two grandsons, Phillip Grant Petitt and wife Gayanne of Maysville, GA, and Andrew Jason Petitt and wife Karen of Princeton; two great-grandsons, Adam Grant and Ryan Seth Petitt both of Maysville, GA; two brothers, Gene Pettitt of Danese and Carl Petitt and wife Lorene of Danese; three sisters, Gracie Smith of Ansted, Vivian Sweeney Atwood of Norris, TN, and Frances Conner of Mabscott. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with his son Grant Petitt Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Beckley. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral parlors. Phillip Petitt, Andrew Petitt, Jim Allen, Sean Green, Franklin Sweeney, Mike Petitt, Robert Daniel and Vincent Daniel will serve as pallbearers. He was a very devoted Christian, having been a member of the Mabscott Christian Baptist Church for approximately 30 years. Denver liked to hunt, fish, and camp at his Moncove Lake camp, as well as spend time with his family at the farm on Sunday Road, Fayette County. He had just recently moved from Beckley. Denver loved his family very much and will be missed by his wife, Helen Mills Petitt, to whom he had been married for 49 years, on Jan. 25, 2006. He is also survived by his son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Ceresa Petitt, of Victor; two grandsons, Richard and his wife Ashley Petitt of Oak Hill and Rodney Petitt of Sunday Road, Victor, who were the "apples of his eye"; great-granddaughter, Ashton Petitt of Oak Hill, to whom he was very devoted; three brothers, Grant Petitt of Hinton, Ronald Petitt of Lakeland, Fla., and Carl Petitt of Danese; three sisters, Gracie Smith of Ansted, Frances Conner of Mabscott, and Vivian Sweeney Atwood of Tennessee; friends, Rick, Ricky Dale, and Brent Moye, and Vicki Turner; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-neph-ews; and his church family. Graveside services and burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Mills Cemetery at Egeria, with Pastors Harmon Davis and Doug Holly officiating. Nephews and grandsons will serve as casketbearers. There will be no public visitation.
