Loyd Hall and burial will conclude in the Arapaho Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Viola (Shockey) Smith was born March 13, 1924 to John Shockey and Mamie (Kincaid) Shockey in Fayette County, West Virginia and passed away early Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in the Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Oklahoma. Mrs. Smith was raised in West Virginia and attended her schooling in the Oakhill School. She had to stop her formal education at very young age but continued to learn to read and write by using the Bible. She moved to Connecticut when she was a young lady to work in a needle factory during WWII. She met the love of her life and he was in the military and he moved her back to Cordell, OK where she lived with his family until he got out of the service. On February 4, 1942 they were united in marriage and made their home in Cordell for a short time. They moved to Clinton in 1946 where they lived for the rest of their married life and raised their five children. She was a member of the Arapaho 1st Baptist Church; she loved the outdoors where she spent countless hours gardening and working in her yard; she enjoyed her animals, fishing, collecting peacock feathers and she was a great cook and an accomplished seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, her parents, a sister, Ida Martin and two brothers Bill Shockey and Houston Shockey. She is survived by four daughters, Velda Jo Sams and her husband, Jim, of West Virginia, Vonna Sue Phillips and husband Hoyt, of Clinton, Verla Beth Powers,of Arapaho, Vivian Rose Stockton, of Clinton and a son, Virgil Smith and wife, Pat, of Arapaho and a sister, Savannah Thrower, of CA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Danna Hillenbrand, of MT, Virgil Smith, Jr., of El Reno, April Stucker, of Arapaho, Amanda Pugh, of Fletcher, OK, Adam Bieberich, of Clinton, Crystal Snider, of Clinton, Melissa Hoffman,of Long Dale, OK, James Davis, of Clinton, Lori Murphy, of Arapaho, Sarah Claussen, of Thomas and John Lair,of Clinton and 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.6,3 |

She died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at her home. She was born in Oak Hill, W. Va., a retired cashier from the U.S. Census Bureau and previously worked at I.C.I. America in Charlestown. She volunteered much of her life to charitable organizations, including the Empty Stocking Fund, the Community Kitchen and was later recognized by The Evening News as an outstanding citizen for all of her volunteer work. She was a very active member of the Clark County Democratic Party where she served as campaign manager for Jimmy Bottorff (past state representative) and Dean Marble. She was the past manager of Green Springs Mobile Home Park for 60 years and helped the residents any way possible to make their lives happy. She was a member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church, a charter member of one of the first 4-H clubs in America, a member of the Democratic Women's Club, a Kentucky Colonel, recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award and received the Special Deputy of Clark County Award from Michael L. Becher. She is survived by her daughter, Candy Wilson, of Jeffersonville; a brother, Sen. Shirley Love and his wife, Audrey, of Oak Hill, W.Va; a sister, Margaret Painter, of Oak Hill, W.Va; granddaughter, Kelli McFarland and her husband, Mac, of Jeffersonville; grandson, Todd Wilson and his wife, Rebecca, of Jeffersonville; great-grandson, Zachary Brown, of Jeffersonville; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family, Esther Henderson, of Jeffersonville, Lea Ann Kuehl and her husband, Richard, of Carbondale, Ill., and Carey Davis and her husband, Chris, of Jeffersonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Minnix; and her parents, Earl and Winona Love.8,9 |
