"Beckley's second place of worship was the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States. Alfred Beckley deeded the church trustees one half acre of 17 July 1854 on the southwest corner of the intersection of Heber and Neville streets, 'being part of the school reserve.' The trustees were Abraham Bragg, Meredith Upton, Allen B. Huddleston, John Kincaid, William Johnson, Isaiah Roberts, William Maxwell, Kennerly Cassady and James Cassady. This church was of the Northern branch of the Methodist Church, which had split in 1844 in a dispute over the slavery issue. It ran into trouble with followers of the Methodist Church, South, and faded from the Beckley scene before the Civil War. The Northern Methodist's property, Lot 26, reverted to Alfred Beckley in 1857." [From Jim Wood, Raleigh County, West Virginia, Beckley, WV: Raleigh County Historical Society, 1994, p.83.]. |
