1. James1 Sims was born in Culpeper Co, VA 8 October 1754.(1) James died after 1840 in Nicholas Co, VA. There is a family headed by James Sims Sr. in the 1840 Nicholas Co, VA census, age 80-90. This contradicts the 1848 Chancery Suit in Nicholas Co. that states James died in 1836.

He married twice. He married Phebe --?--. Phebe died January 1794 in Bath Co, VA. An inquisition into the death of Phebe Sims was taken before John Dean, Coronor, on 22 January 1794 in Bath Co., which stated that "the said Phebe Sims came to her death, do say upon their Oathes, that the said Phebe was accidently drowned occasioned by the horse whereon she rode Rearing and plunging and throwing her into the water." He married Elizabeth Cotton in Bath Co, VA, 25 October 1796. Bond 25 October 1796, but no return listed in Bath Co.; it could have been filed in another county. Surety Enock Cotton. Benjamin Cotton consents for daughter Elizabeth. Witnesses, Enock Cotton and Shadrick Cotton. (Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns of Bath Co., VA)

Elizabeth was born ca 1782.(2) She was listed as a resident in the census report in Nicholas Co, VA, 1830. Assumed from female aged 40-50 in household.

He bought property in Bath Co, VA, 19 August 1796.(3) Grant to James Sims, 240 acres on Bollors Ridge, on the waters of Jacksons River. The grant was recorded in Botetourt Co, VA. James was granted the land on the basis of a Treasury Warrant.

He sold property in Bath Co, VA, 27 October 1798.(4) James Simms & Elizabeth his wife of Bath Co. to Alice McClintic of Bath Co., 240 acres on Bollars Ridge on the waters of Jackson River, for 5 shillings current money. Signed by James Sims, and Elizabeth gave her mark. Witnesses were Samuel Vance, Thos. Milhollin, Wm. Dean?, and another, unreadable.

A census listed James as head of household in Kanawha Co, VA, 1810. James was age 45 or up.

A census listed James as head of household in Nicholas Co, VA, 1820. A census listed James as head of household in Nicholas Co, VA, 1830. James owned 5 slaves in this year: 1 m 10-20, 1 m 20-30, 2 f 10-24, 1 f 24-36.

He resided in Nicholas Co, VA September 1835. Signed a document of manumission for his slave Isaac.

He resided in Nicholas Co, VA March 1836. In March 1836, James Sims signed a deed to Isaac Sims, his slave, outlining terms of his manumission. The marginal note to the deed noted "Deed to Isaac Sims, Sept. 9th, 1842.". This may indicate the year of James' death.

A census listed James as head of household in Nicholas Co, VA, 1840. Aged 80-90.
