Birth*20 Jun 1900 Roy was born at Potts Creek, Alleghany Co, VA, on 20 Jun 1900. Roy's date of birth was unknown. His family was enumerated in the census of 1900 on June 28th, but he was not listed, though census rules excluded those born after the official enumeration date. He later chose the date June 20th because it was the date of WV statehood.

Roy said that he was born in Fire Creek, Fayette Co., WV, where his mother died shortly after his birth. The 1920 census notes that he was born in WV. Perhaps he was born later in 1900 and his family had left Alleghany Co. after the enumeration on 28 June?

After the death of his mother, Roy was raised by his aunt Susan Tingler Bowyer.. 
 He was the son of William Henry Fridley and Laura Jeanette 'Nettie' Tingler.
