(George was the son of Uriah and Masse (Hughes) Gandee; (2) Mary Burdette, married Henderson Gandee (brother to Mary Jane Gandee); (3) Sarah Burdette, married Jonathan R. Reed of Flat Fork (M: 9 Oct. 1879-Roane Co.); (4) John Asher Burdette, died young; (5) Giles Newman Burdette, (born 1859) married Martha Ellen Hildreth (M: 5 Nov 1882 Roane Co.); (6) Martha J. Burdette, (born 1863-died 1897), married Chittendon Coon in 1886; (7) Ellen Burdette, died young; (9) George Whittington Burdette, (born 1869) married Julia Suck (M: 3 Oct 1895-Roane Co.). He attended Locustdale School and graduated in 1927 from Charleston Barber College. He practiced barbering at Covington, VA until 1929. It was during his stay in Covington that he met Violet Arrington who was born July 23, 1909, the daughter of James Isaac and Leonia Wolf Arrington at Covington. Ira and Violet were married on November 8, 1928 in Hinton by the Rev. Henry Dillon. In 1929, Ira began working for the C&O Railway as a laborer and continued with the C&O until his retirement in 1971 as section foreman. When he died on January 7, 1979, he was a member of the Bluestone Baptist Church at Jumping Branch and of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way.
