She was listed as a resident in the census report in Monroe Co, VA, 1850. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Wolf Creek Twp, Monroe Co, WV, 1870.

Conflicting evidence states that James was born in Greenbrier Co, VA, 14 Oct 1783.⁽¹¹¹⁾ In the 1900 Monroe Co, WV census, James' daughter Margaret Alderson Smithson noted that her father was born in Maryland.
